Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain, affecting roughly 2 million Americans each year. It occurs when the plantar fascia — the thick band of tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes — becomes inflamed due to overuse, poor foot mechanics, or inadequate footwear. That sharp, stabbing pain with the first steps of the morning is the hallmark symptom, and the right orthotic support can dramatically speed recovery.

Common Causes of Plantar Fasciitis

• Repetitive stress from running, walking, or prolonged standing
• Flat feet (overpronation) or high arches placing uneven tension on the fascia
• Tight calf muscles and Achilles tendon limiting ankle dorsiflexion
• Sudden increases in physical activity or training intensity
• Excess body weight increasing load on the plantar fascia
• Hard work surfaces without adequate cushioning
• Poor-fitting or worn-out footwear

Common Symptoms:

• Sharp heel pain with the first steps in the morning
• Pain at the bottom of the foot after prolonged rest
• Aching or burning sensation along the arch
• Increased pain after (not during) physical activity
• Heel tenderness when pressing directly on the plantar fascia
• Stiffness in the foot and ankle first thing in the morning

How Is Plantar Fasciitis Treated?

• Plantar fascia stretches and calf-stretching exercises
• Plantar fascia orthoses and arch-support insoles
• Night splints maintaining the foot in a dorsiflexed position
• Corticosteroid injections for persistent pain
• Physical therapy focused on eccentric loading
• Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT)
• Ice therapy and anti-inflammatory medications
• Surgical plantar fascia release (rare; last resort)

How Foot & Ankle Orthotics Help Plantar Fasciitis:

A plantar fascia orthosis (PFO) or night splint reduces strain on the plantar fascia by supporting the arch and maintaining a slight stretch overnight — the critical period when the fascia tightens and micro-tears can worsen. RCAI’s foot orthotic solutions are designed to distribute pressure evenly across the plantar surface, reduce inflammation, and promote gradual tissue healing. Consistent use significantly reduces morning pain and shortens overall recovery time.
